This summer, the Center for New Music partners with Cal Shakes’ The Triangle Lab to present three special concerts at Fridays in the Grove: performances by the Bay Area’s best poets, musicians, comics, and more.

Our third and final show features Pet the Tiger, an improvised acoustic collective for invented instruments with David Samas (composer/inventor/extended technique vocalist), Ian Saxton (programer/percussionist), Peter Bonos (horns/explosives). The group explores new concepts in friction bowing and split pics, with a special interest in unusual multiphonics and interference patterns. They perform using a wide assortment of invented, found and re-purposed instruments in order to create landscapes and tell stories in sound, punctuated with song and text.

Pet the Tiger will play Music for Fairies and Elves in anticipation of the evening’s performance of A Midsummer Night’s Dream — a work that seeks to enchant the listener with exotic “sounds and sweet airs that give delight, but hurt not”.

Fridays in the Grove are included with your ticket to A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Center for New Music fans can get a 20% discount to tickets on the night of the performance with the code GROVE.

You can also get cheaper tickets by using the Under 30 discount to get $20 off (follow the instructions on the ticket page) or calling the CalShakes box office on the day of the show between noon and 2 PM.

If you wish to attend the Grove performance without staying for the production, you may ask for a “grounds pass” at the on-site box office. There is free parking at the theater as well as a free BART shuttle from the Orinda BART station, leaving every 20 minutes beginning two hours before the show.
