Active Music Series presents Ornettology + Ze Bib! + Alex Christie
Ze Bib! is a collaborative effort between cellist/electronic musician Shanna Sordahl and percussionist
Robert Lopez. Their music grapples with the spastic intensity arising from their explorations into sound worlds developed both collectively and independently. Both are graduates of Mills College's Music MFA program, and their extreme musical interests converge with explosive force. Their music is tinged with influences ranging between noise, free improvisation, avant garde rock, and heavy drone. Currently, they have been cultivating interpretations of material and psychological structures grown out of improvisations and the deconstruction of composed melodic and rhythmic material. https://soundcloud.com/ze-bib
Ornettology is the brainchild of guitarist
Myles Boisen, presenting unique arrangements of compositions by Ornette Coleman and realized by a crack squad of players that can romp and ramble in the myriad of directions posed by Mr. Coleman's music. Expect tight realizations of the iconoclasts’ work, including free ranging jazz landscapes, funky grooves, and harmolodic improvisation.
Steve Adams, alto saxophone;
Phillip Greenlief, tenor saxophone;
Myles Boisen and
John Finkbeiner, guitars; John Hanes, drums; Chris Grady, trumpet;
Lisa Mezzacappa, bass.
Alex Christie is a San Francisco Bay Area composer, performer, improviser, and educator working in the worlds of both acoustic and electronic music. His work is the hybridization of hyper-intellectualized contemporary music theory and a childish obsession with explosive sound and bright, flashing lights. Recently, He has become very interested in the exploration of intensely focused sound worlds and likes to play with recursive processes. Christie performs as a laptopist in several veins of music, ranging from experimental improvisatory noise to electronic dance. He performs freely improvised music as a saxophonist and is always striving to find new ways in which the worlds of electronic music and free improvisation intersect. http://alexchristie.org/home/bio/
