Black Cedar is the winner of a 2014 Musical Grant from San Francisco Friends of Chamber Music and an affiliate ensemble with San Francisco Friends of Chamber Music. It is the only ensemble devoted to the performance and creation of existing and new chamber music for flute, cello, and guitar. The Berkeley Times writes "Mysterious and penetrating low notes of alto flute…a dark density of harshly scrubbed cello with the metallic spangle of sharply plucked guitar notes; high bird-calls on wooden flute and low cello whispers…The piece certainly worked, and that, powerfully." Their debut album will be released in 2015 featuring new commissions by Garrett Shatzer and David Smith and never-recorded trios for flute, cello, and guitar: Nathan Kolosko’s Hungarian Trio (2012, Ross Carey’s Te Whanganui-a-Tara (1998), Klaus Hinrich Stahmer’s Debussyana (1983), and Street’s Variations (1977). Kris Palmer performs on wood flute, Steve Lin on guitar, and Nancy Kim on cello. Giacomo Fiore is an Italian-born guitarist who is comfortable in a wide range of styles, from traditional music to the avant-garde. He will perform recent selections from his latest album “iv: american electric guitars” as well as a few surprises.
