Rituals, Wires & Magic: four sets of new music

  1. Curt Brown, a multimedia artist and writer from Akron, Ohio currently residing in Oakland, will perform on modular synthesizer with possible electro-acoustic interventions. He is a co-founder of the Akron-based arts collective Rubber City Noise and has released music and performed with a variety of projects and groups: Black Unicorn, Cane Swords, Mousecop, Wyld Stallyns, Baingan Bharta, etc.

  2. In January members of the RITUAL 1: thicket ensemble met to accompany Mari Osanai, Dana Iova-Koga and Shinichi Iova-Koga’s performance. Now, Suki O'Kane, Tim Kim, and Katherine McDonald reconvene to combine voice, violin, processed water and object to further an investigation catalyzed by inkBoat’s 95 RITUALS (for Anna Halperin). This creative collective is developing and performing a monumental set of works informed by Anna:
“Ritual is another word that needs a new definition… Ritual, as I use the term, refers to an artistic process by which people gather and unify themselves in order to confront the challenges of their existence.”

  3. Violinist Jeffrey Young (Brooklyn) will perform a quirky selection of his own music for solo violin and live electronics under the heading Jeffrey Young’s Magical Kingdom of Dust, including in-your-face theatrics, unabashed shredding, and oceanic soundscapes. He’ll also play a short piece for speaking violinist and retuned violin by Paul Pinto, a fellow member of New York’s thingNY composer-performer collective. Listen to Jeffrey.

  4. BARBED WIRE is a series of 37 new graphic scores, composed by Phillip Greenlief in December 2014 during a composing retreat in Coastal Maine and performed tonight by Phillip (reeds), Elzbieta Polak (violin) and Lisa Mezzacappa (bass).
