"Black Cedar has done a wonderful job of making the case that chamber music can involve approaches to instrumentation not usually expected." – San Francisco Examiner, March 2015

"Hats off to them…their connectivity with each other was most apparent…as was their ability to convey their joy to the audience." – Santa Cruz Sentinel, January 2015

With Kris Palmer on flute, Nancy Kim on cello, and Steve Lin on guitar, Black Cedar is developing this unique instrumental combination into a staple of the chamber music genre by nurturing new commissions, uncovering forgotten compositions, and re-imagining Baroque trio sonatas and American folk music. They are the recipients of a 2014 grant from San Francisco Friends of Chamber Music, and they are an affiliate ensemble with SFFCM. Their 2016 debut album will feature commissions by American composers Garrett Shatzer, David Smith, and Durwynne Hsieh, plus never-recorded trios by American composer Nathan Kolosko, German composer Klaus Hinrich Stahmer, and New Zealand composer Ross Carey. In less than two years, Black Cedar has performed over twenty-five concerts throughout Northern California, and their live radio concerts include KKUP 91.5 in San Jose, KALW 91.7 in San Francisco, and KWMR 90.5 in Marin County.

This Berkeley Arts Festival concert includes works from their upcoming debut album, including two new commissions by Bay Area composers Garrett Shatzer and David Smith, plus music by one of the Bay Area’s most popular composers, Durwynne Hsieh, along with works by Cambodian composer Chinary Ung and Germany’s Klaus Hinrich Stahmer.
