Welcome to a new year at The Nunnery. We will be featuring solo performers this year starting off with:

2:00 Bruce Ackley - improvised soprano saxophone music.

A 1986 Bay Area Music award nominee for best saxophonist, Ackley has recorded with such noted musicians as John Zorn, Henry Kaiser, and Eugene Chadborne, and collaborated with trombone/electronics composer J.A. Deane on sound environments for the films of Bay Area film maker, David Michalak. He was a founding member of the Sound Clinic, an improvising wind trio, with trumpeter George Sams and saxophonist Lew Jordan and a 1970's precursor to the all-winds Rova, and participated in the founding of the Blue Dolphin, an artist-run alternative art space in San Francisco.

3:00 Cheryl Leonard - compositions and improvisations for field recordings and natural-object instruments, including works inspired by Californian, Australian, and Polar ecosystems.

Over the last decade Cheryl has focused on investigating sounds, structures, and objects from the natural world. Many of her recent works cultivate stones, wood, water, ice, sand, shells, feathers, and bones as musical instruments. Leonard's music has been performed worldwide. Her work with natural object instruments has been featured on KQED TV's local arts show Spark, the Hallmark Network's New Morning Show and CBS's Evening Magazine, as well as in Tim Perkis's documentary film Noisy People. She is the recipient of grants from the American Music Center, Meet the Composer and others.

Bruce will join Cheryl at the end of her set for a finale.
