Formed in 1997 by composer, drummer and three-time GRAMMY nominee John Hollenbeck, the Claudia Quintet is one of the most revered and original groups to spring from the creative cauldron of New York’s downtown music scene. Hollenbeck named the band for an effusive audience member at an early show who vowed to return for future performances and never did – an act which sparked the imagination of the drummer and gave him a moniker to fit the collective ensemble he envisioned. The band boasts unique instrumentation and a lineup composed of some of the finest exploratory instrumentalists in modern jazz. Woodwind player Chris Speed is an established bandleader and widely known for his work with saxophonist Tim Berne and trumpet giant Dave Douglas. Accordionist Red Wierenga specializes in electro-acoustic approaches, blurring the lines between the acoustic and digital music worlds. Matt Moran is an acclaimed vibraphonist who leads Balkan brass juggernaut Slavic Soul Party! Bassist Drew Gress is among the most in-demand artists in jazz, working with artists including Ravi Coltrane, Craig Taborn and Fred Hersch. Merging telepathic group dynamics with whip-crack improvisations and an entrancing gift for melody, the Claudia Quintet have released seven full-length recordings including their latest Cuneiform Records session, September, an autumnal ode to the season of creation and transition.
