Wolfgang Muthspiel, Ambrose Akinmusire, Scott Colley, Gwilym Simcock & Brian Blade/Dave King Trio

Masterful ensemble interplay is on tap for this evening, as two ensembles containing some of jazz’s most intrepid instrumentalists share the bill. Austrian guitarist Wolfgang Muthspiel is an acclaimed and prolific artist who came to jazz through a classical education in Europe and made waves at Boston’s Berklee College, eventually succeeding Pat Metheny in vibraphone legend Gary Burton’s working band. During his career, Muthspiel shared his dazzling guitar work on projects with David Liebman, Peter Erskine, Paul Motian, Ralph Towner, Youssou N’Dour, Gary Peacock and Larry Grenadier, and has led over 30 sessions. His high-powered quintet includes trumpeter Ambrose Akinmusire and drummer Brian Blade. Best known as the rhythmic engine behind The Bad Plus, drummer Dave King brings a finely wrought musicality and wicked humor to every project he has been involved with. Co-founder of the avant-jazz collective Happy Apple and a multi-disciplinary musician and composer, King has collaborated with artists ranging from Bill Frisell and Joe Lovano to Boots Riley and the Mark Morris Dance Group. For this double bill, King presents his telepathic trio featuring pianist Bill Carrothers and bassist Billy Peterson, a band documented on King’s 2012 release, I’ve Been Ringing You.
