Blood of the Air is a suite of pieces based on the poetry and speech melodies of Beat-era Surrealist poet Philip Lamantia. This exciting new composition features a greatly expanded version of Brown’s working band and utilizes recordings of Lamantia reading his own work, with the pitches and cadence of the poet’s voice providing the raw melodic and rhythmic material, in addition to live readings by poet Andrew Joron and interpretations of Lamantia’s speech melodies by vocalist Lorin Benedict. A 20-year veteran of the Bay Area jazz scene, Brown has led the Sheldon Brown Group since 1994, and recently assembled a quintet devoted to the music of the criminally overlooked piano genius Herbie Nichols. He has performed worldwide with Cuban piano master Omar Sosa, appearing on five of Sosa’s albums, and is in constant demand as a performer in the Bay Area, working extensively with Club Foot Orchestra, the Realistic Orchestra and Mike Patton’s Mondo Cane.
Brown has performed internationally as a featured soloist with Cuban pianist Omar Sosa, and recorded on 5 of Sosaʼs albums. As a composer, Brown has written music for his own groups and many of the other groups he performs with. For Club Foot Orchestra he composed music for the silent films, Metropolis, Sherlock Jr., Pandoraʼs Box, and The Hands of Orlac. He also wrote music for Club Footʼs scores for the cartoon series The Twisted Tales of Felix the Cat, which aired on CBS.

Gabby Fluke-Mogul is a performing, teaching, composing & collaborating-improviser based out of the bay area. they have existed as a violin-body//body in south florida, western massachusetts, & the wider new england area. She performs in & with a variety of projects, installations, bodies, & instrument bodies in addition to facilitating community-based workshops, & teaching in public, private, & non-profit learning spaces. their compositions//text-scores take up issues of the politics & poetics of bodies & instrument-bodies. Gabby studied with Fred Frith, Zeena Parkins, Roscoe Mitchell, India Cooke, & the late Pauline Oliveros at Mills College MFA program for performance & literature with improvisation specialization.
Kelley Kipperman is a queer & vegan multi-media artist, who has spent time living, breathing, & collaborating in the western massachusetts & greater new england areas, berlin, & most recently the bay area. Inspired by something, everything, & sometimes even nothing, k is always thinking about what it means to be connected to & critical of one's own body, identity, & privilege within music, sound, noise, silence, composition, art, communities, & everything else in the entire world (also outer space).
