Danish pianist Søren Kjaergaard performs solo piano improvisations from an ongoing artistic research project that looks into solo performance as an expressive format for multi-layered and multi-directional improvisation. As a pianist and improviser Søren Kjærgaard is engaged in how one can open a field of possibilities within the natural limitations of the solo format and the core relation: Player – Piano. His work includes audio-visual documentation, experimenting with different ways of listening and looking (back) into the creative process in an attempt to open up new ways of creating dynamic circuits in the artistic practice. Kjærgaard’s work as a pianist, composer and improviser encompasses a variety of settings ranging from his trans-Atlantic trio with drummer Andrew Cyrille and bassist Ben Street, to the duo collaboration with Torben Ulrich, the 82 year old legendary Danish tennis player and inter-disciplinary artist.

Chris Brown opens with a performance of his 2003 improvisational work "Retrospectacles", for piano and interactive electronic signal processing. His interview with composer Frank Oteri featured in this month's NewMusicBox offers a broad introduction to his recent work and its aesthetics engaging with improvisation, composition, technology, and tuning.
