VERTEBRATE
Vertebrate is an experimental chamber trio led by percussionist/composer/improviser Tim DeCillis, featuring Max Judelson on bass and Steven Lugerner on clarinets. Taking cues from minimalism, improvised music, jazz, ambient, and many other musical inspirations, the group combines hypnotic melodies, dense rhythms, and spirited improvisation to create a unique group sound that pushes the boundaries of contemporary chamber music.

NUCCI/JOSEPHSON DUO

Aurora Josephson and Kim Nucci met at Mills in Fall of 2014. They have since been working with each other on various improvisation related projects. Both self identify as crazy cat people. Aurora and Kim are researching improvisation rituals and the mysticism surrounding it. Their current project is an odyssey for processed voices and electronics, exploring extended vocal techniques for amplified(and altered) voice.

Kim Nucci: electronics/voice

Aurora Josephson: voice

Aurora Josephson is an accomplished musician and visual artist residing in San Francisco, California. Building on a foundation of operatic training and a BA in Music Performance from Mills College, she has forged a bold vocal style that is uniquely her own. To unleash the limitless range of sonic possibilities in the voice, Josephson employs a variety of extended and unconventional techniques drawn from the worlds of contemporary composition, improvisation, and rock. She has performed and recorded with international talents like improvising musicians Martin Blume, Alvin Curran, Gianni Gebbia, Henry Kaiser, Joelle Leandre, Phillip Wachsmann and William Winant, musical groups like Big City Orchestra, The Molecules, the Flying Luttenbachers T.D. Skatchit & Company, and the Merce Cunningham Dance Company.

Kim Nucci is a multimedia artist, composer and technologist. They are currently engaged in researching concepts of cybernetic memory and digital/physical body. They recently completed an artist residency at ACRE in Steuben, WI. They hold an MFA in Electronic Music and MA in Composition from Mills College, and a BA in Visual Arts and Music Composition from Bennington College. Kim claims to be the Pope of facebook and worships dollar slice pizza as the one true god, while living in the god(pizza)less land of California.

JOHN MCCOWEN (SOLO)

John McCowen: clarinets

John McCowen is an Oakland-based composer/clarinetist/improviser specializing in post-electronic acoustic music. He travels back-and-forth from Chicago quite a bit to play in the avant-rock group Wei Zhongle. His solo work is focused on the extended possibilities of the clarinet/contrabass clarinet. This embraces electronically-generative music as a structural starting point for acoustic composition - a post-electronic process. He embraces long-form drones as a means to extrude the structure within - treating the clarinet as an acoustic synthesizer. As a performer, he is into heavy collaborations, performing with Eb, Bb, & contrabass clarinets, as well as treble and bass recorders - encouraging preparations. He has worked with Roscoe Mitchell, Sult, Fred Frith, Tool, Ned Rothenberg, as well as others.
