Biography:

". . . Forceful, immediate, inventive." Signal to Noise

Jim Ryan was born in St. Paul, Minnesota and graduated from the University of
Minnesota in philosphy. Began listening to bebop at about age 15 and took up
the trombone but was forced to abandon it about a year later when his parents sent
him to work in an electrode factory in North Carolina. Nearing his mid-30's and living in Paris, France he picked up the flute in about '68 and shortly thereafter acquired a c-melody sax. In the early 70's he participated in a year-long workshop organized and led by Steve Lacy.

Jim formed the "Free Music Formation" about this time, and played in Paris and
other European cities. He returned to the States in 1975 and settled in Washington, D.C. where he formed the Art Performance Group in 1979.

In 1987 he moved California and lived in Marin County until 1993 when he moved to
Oakland and hooked up with the Bay Area Improv Scene. In 1997 he launched his
own group "Forward Energy" which has been performing regularly since then. Jim has also participated in Marco Eneidi's "American Jungle Orchestra," and Eddie Gale's "Orchestra for World Peace."

In the Spring of 2000, he founded the Electro/Acoustic Sextet of Oakland which was a melding of free jazz and 'avant' academic styles. The group performed in Oakland and at the Big Sur Experimental Music Festival in May, 2000. In the Spring of 2000 he performed in the 401 Festival at Theatre Artaud in composer Matthew Burtner's piece for nine tenor saxophones, "Portals of Distortion." In early 2001 formed: THE LEFT COAST IMPROV GROUP (see this title under 'Artists' on this site). In late 2002 Jim formed a third group SUBJECTS OF DESIRE which adds vocals and texts (written by Jim) to an avant improv approach. This ensemble has been through two incarnations and is about to embarck upon its third. They will appear on May 12th in the Art Performance Lab series at the 1510 Performance Space in West Oakland (see Bay Improviser 'Calendar.'

Three Sets 1) Go-Go Fightmaster (4tet), 2) Ava, Devin, & Weasel(Ava's Thrash Jazz Band),
3) The Spirit Moves Us (Trio)

Go-Go Fightmaster is a band: Aaron Bennett saxes&straw, John Finkbinder guitar&straw, Lisa Mezzacappa contrabass, Vijay Anderson drums. Go-Go Fightmaster is music that seeks only to be music and relevant in this era of violent expansionism and blatant disregard for the declining state of the planet. Go-Go Fightmaster does not seek to be the most modern, historical, punk/jazz/disco/dark/light/cool/whatever shocking, comforting, Spiritual, secular, or avant garde. Go-Go Fightmaster are lovers, not fighters and we do not engage in the form of dancing known as "Go-Go". Go-Go Fightmaster does not like cheese (except on crackers). Go-Go Fightmaster is the ideal band for your corporate event. Go-Go Fightmaster loves you.

Ava Mendoza plays guitar, Devin Hoff plays upright bass, Weasel Walter plays drums.
***Ava’s main band is 'Mute Socialite'. She is also a composer, and electronic musician living in Oakland, CA. She plays improvised music, weird rock, and original compositions. Improvised music was the first area of music in which she became vitally interested as a classically-trained teenager. ***Devin Hoff Contrabassist and composer, has played thousands of shows around the world, everything from punk clubs to major jazz festivals, left-wing benefits to barn dances, and has appeared on dozens of records, radio and television programs. He is currently a member of:
Good For Cows, Redressers, Odessa Chen, Nels Cline Singers, 7 Year Rabbit Cycle, Red Rosa, John Schott’s Typical Orchestra, and the Ben Goldberg School; and has recorded and/or wroked regularly with: Carla Kihlstedt, Vijay Iyer, Xiu Xiu, Jewlia Eisenberg, Scott Amendola, Carla Bozulich, Howard Wiley, Graham Connah, Bill Stewart, Arnoldo Garcia, Hugh Ragin, and many more.
***Weasel Walter descended on the Planet somewhere in the Midwest (aka The Heartland) sometime in 1972 and has always been very weird . . . only the drums and the Flying Luttenbachers saved him from eternal incarceration in middle America. He now lives in Oakland, CA but goes to other places too, to play with other famous weirdos.

The Spirit Moves Us is a trio of veteran improvisers flowing to the East Bay from the midwest (Detroit, Chicago, Indianapolis, & St. Paul, MN) through r&b, jazz, and avant experimental groups. Eastbania (San Francisco’s East Bay Area) has been home to them for many years now, and they have worked together frequently in various configurations. Spirit on percussion is considered by local and national aficionados as an original master of the free form jazz genre. Bob Marsh has brought the cello to an awesome freshness and versatility, and Jim Ryan on flute, saxophones, kalimba, & spoken word has performed regularly throughout the country and locally with his Forward Energy bands.
