Artist Statement: I use combinations of voice, text, electronic music and theater to create my work. My central focus is on voice: through singing; spoken word; or an emphasis on the physical, instrumental elements of the vocal instrument (lips, tongue, teeth, breath). I often seek to recreate the experience of vibration as felt from inside the body and outside of it in the air. Some of the common themes in my work are contemplative and temporary states of mind, internal dialogue and character revealed through relationships. These qualities are emphasized through my use of electronics by allowing the time & acoustic space for sounds and concepts to evolve. Work-In-Progress: /// Collaboration with Ben Azarm/// "The Atchleys", duo with Kenneth /// "Influctuations", the performer stands behind a translucent screen. From the rear of the stage, a pair of lights cast the performer's shadow onto the screen. The accompanying sound of the piece is of one long, uninterrupted, micro-inflected breath and the sound of the tongue vibrating against the lips, hard palate, and teeth along with a layered recording of these sounds. The unhurried temporal scale of this work is designed to allow the time and acoustic space for contemplation and the audience's collaborative imagination to evolve. /// "I Dream", this nocturne is a mix of my tongue vibrating against the lips, hard palate, and teeth along with casio keyboard chords and a wash of shortwave fuzz and dirty vinyl. ...........Performance |
