Matthew GoodheartLink to home page : Matthew Goodheart Biography: Pianist and composer Matthew Goodheart has been trained in both jazz and classical idioms, and has also pursued studies in traditional West-African and Afro-Cuban folk music. His work ranges from open-form improvisational structures to fully notated chamber pieces. He has also worked with many prominent artists, including Cecil Taylor, George Lewis, Glenn Spearman, Raphe Malik, Lisle Ellis, Chris Brown, Annea Lockwood and Christian Wolff. He has performed the works of John Cage, Morton Feldman, Karlheinz Stockhausen, and Alvin Curran. Goodheart performs frequently as a solo artist, and with his group the Matthew Goodheart Trio. The trio has featured Marco Eneidi on alto and Donald Robinson on drums. Other current projects include the Marco Eneidi American Jungle Orchestra which includes percussionists Donald Robinson and Garth Powell. Goodheart received an M.A. in composition from Mills College, and was a featured artist in New Langton Art's 1996 Bay Area Awards Show.Goodheart describes his own work as "exploring the relationship between the Creative Music Tradition and Post-Cage developments in acoustic music. This is worked out in two ways: First, through the creation of individualistic improvisational structures and techniques in solo and group contexts, which generate a sonic manifestation of the shifting dynamics between group and individual identities.
