The second night of Other Minds 15 begins with electronic music phenom Natasha Barrett (b. 1972). Born and trained in the UK but living for the past decade in Oslo, Barrett has become one of the most accomplished practitioners of electroacoustic music by revealing to listeners details of a sound that might otherwise be missed. In the two works to be played at OM 15, Barrett’s expertise in transforming field recordings into immersive and powerful landscapes will be on full display.
At 74, saxophonist Kidd Jordan (b. 1935) has become a legend in avant-garde jazz circles and has been knighted by the Republic of France, but remains largely unknown in the US. He has released over 30 recordings, organized the first World Saxophone Quartet, performed alongside Cannonball Adderley, Ornette Coleman, Cecil Taylor, and other jazz and pop legends, and mentored hundreds of students over 30 years at Southern University in New Orleans, including Branford and Wynton Marsalis. Jordan appears alongside fellow luminaries William Parker (bassist and OM 9 artist) and percussionist Warren Smith.
In 2008, Poland’s top arts prize, the OPUS award, was given to the brilliant composer Paweł Mykietyn (b. 1971). This rising star embraces an “all-of-the-above” stylistic approach, on display in his stunning Epiphora for piano and pre-recorded media, and the enigmatic and slightly absurd String Quartet No. 2, the latter work to be performed by a festival favorite, San Francisco’s Del Sol String Quartet.
