I Hate to Sing: The Music of Carla Bley
Performed by the Permanent Wave Ensemble
led by Kasey Knudsen and Lisa Mezzacappa

Saturday March 6, 2010 8pm
The Jazzschool,
2087 Addison Street
Berkeley CA

San Francisco Bay Area bandleader/composers Kasey Knudsen (saxophone) and Lisa Mezzacappa (bass) present a concert of music in tribute to the adventurous and singular bandleader, composer and pianist Carla Bley. Bley, who was born in Oakland, has been active internationally since the early '60s as a composer, arranger and bandleader, and was a prominent voice (and one of the only female voices) in the '70s New York and European jazz scenes, where she shaped the sound of the era with her close associates Steve Swallow, Charlie Haden, Paul Bley, and Gary Burton, among others. Mezzacappa and Knudsen's new Permanent Wave Ensemble debuts arrangements of Bley's music for small and large group settings, as well as new compositions inspired by Bley's long and varied career in music.

Kasey Knudsen, alto saxophone
Matt Nelson, tenor saxophone
Cory Wright, clarinets
Henry Hung, trumpet
Rob Ewing, trombone
Michael Coleman, piano
Lisa Mezzacappa, acoustic bass
Sam Ospovat, drums

Cost: $15
