IDIOMATIC IMPROV: ROCK
Shudder (substituting for rock band PG13) will open the show with less idiomatic, but intriguing sounds from reed players Phillip Greenlief and Kyle Bruckmann, the
electronics of Lance Grabmiller, and guitar of guest John Shiurba.
David Slusser leads Lost Planet in improvising compositions using a vocabulary of idioms. The members of Lost Planet have played together since 1983, having brief notoriety in the early nineties as Pluto, with a CD on Rastascan in 1994, "Shoehorse Emerging". Len Paterson and Steve Clarke interweave guitars, with Marc Weinstein (Amoeba Music) on drums, and Slusser on sax, keys and electronics. They all fill in on bass. The Ava Mendoza Quartet plays compositions for improvising. Ava's group includes Vijay Anderson on drums, Sheldon Brown on alto sax, and Lisa Mezzacappa on acoustic bass.
