Pianist, writer and producer Sarah Cahill specializes in American experimentalist music and new American music in general, and has commissioned, premiered and recorded solo piano works by dozens of composers including John Adams, Kyle Gann, Lou Harrison, Toshi Ichiyanagi, George Lewis, Ursula Mamlok, Ingram Marshall, Andrea Morricone, Pauline Oliveros, Leo Ornstein, Terry Riley, Frederic Rzewski, Julia Wolfe and Evan Ziporyn.
She records on New Albion and has released recordings on Tzadik, CRI, New World, Albany, Cold Blue, and Artifact. Her radio show, Then & Now, can be heard every Sunday evening from 8 to 10 pm on KALW, 91.7 FM.
Rumor has it that she plans to play some Henry Cowell pieces, which will be a special treat for me.
Scott R. Looney is well-known in the Transbay music scene. He's a first-rate pianist and electronicizer whose repertoire spans the gamut from contemporary, improvised and experimental music to radically reinterpreted jazz standards. He concentrates on the piano's radical timbral possibilities, relying notably on light-weight, mobile preparations and small metal bits. We love the sounds Scott makes, and the expressive, emotional voice he brings to the instrument.
Killick, from Athens GA, plays the H'arpeggione, a mutant cello with 6 playing strings, 12 sympathetic strings and a fretted fingerboard. His improvised music "blends primitive folk, heavy metal, and sacred musics from around the world into a distinct voice" (according to Wikipedia.) His most recent recording, Exsanguinette, features collaborators Liz Allbee, Larry Ochs and Brann Dailor.
Tonight percussionist Gino Robair, who requires no introduction, will join him in an improvised duo. Try to imagine primitive sacred heavy metal folk music with styrofoam.
