Mills College Songlines Series Presents Ugnayan (“interlinking”) (1972), by the late Philippine composer José Maceda. Ugnayan was a composition created for simultaneous transmission by 20 radio stations, spreading the sounds of traditional bamboo instruments through radio receivers held by hundreds of participants in public places around the city of Manila.

Dr. Ramón P. Santos will lecture prior to the performance of Ugnayan, organized by Chris Brown of the Mills Music Department, with graduate students from the Seminar in Electronic Music Performance, and with the collaboration of radio station KFJC.
Audience members are strongly encouraged to participate by bringing portable, battery-powered radios, especially boom-boxes, to act as receivers for the sounds of the piece. They will be instructed to tune their radios to one of five FM frequencies while moving through the performance area of Mills’ Greek Theater, dynamically altering the mixture of sounds in the piece.  More...

Wayne Horvitz : Approaching Training and Musical Heritage in Composition and Improvisation, an informance presented by the Rova Arts' Improv:21 series

In discussion with Derk Richardson, Wayne Horvitz will talk about and play music from his recent chamber-jazz compositions that feed off the heritage of American folk musics, jazz and blues, and reveal the thinking behind his own unique body of work, especially focusing on his chamber music for various ensembles.

Rova:Arts is pleased to present Improv:21, a series of “informances” on twenty-first century music that explore the connection between predetermined structure (composition) and performer interpretation (improvisation). Led by master improvisers and composers from the Bay Area and beyond, Improv:21 programs look at the many ways of organizing improvisation through a shifting (i.e. “improvised”) combination of onstage lecture and dialogue, musical demonstration and performance, and audience question-and-answer forum.  More...
