Little Nicky’s presents Moe! Staiano, Aram Shelton, and Noah Phillips

Little Nicky's is a monthly series curated by Noah Phillips and Chuck Johnson. Each installment features a set by a Bay Area artist or group whose sound will complement the special atmosphere of Studio Grand, a multi-use arts space with intimate and lush acoustics.

This night will feature solo sets by Aram Shelton, Noah Phillips and Moe Staiano

Moe! Staiano
Moe! Staiano is an experimental composer, drummer, percussionist, songwriter and multi-instrumental performance artist who has been at the forefront of the Bay Area improvisation scene for over two decades. Moe!'s innovative solo percussion shows feature prepared drum kit, found objects, audio looping and the inventive use of a "percussion guitar" woven in with performance art, which always gets the audience involved and eagerly expectant of what might happen next. He also fronts Surplus 1980, a post-punk band that continues the journey of no-wave musical exploration begun in his previous project, Mute Socialite. Surplus 1980's revolving slate of first-class Bay Area musicians complement Moe!'s bracing guitar and wry wordplay.

ARAM SHELTON
Aram Shelton presents his solo electroacoustic project Tonal Masher. By removing the mouthpiece and reed, Shelton explores a different aspect of a 1937 Conn alto saxophone. Starting with feedback generated via saxophone, microphone and amplifier, Shelton uses nontraditional fingerings to coax an instrument specific set of tones from the vintage horn. He then uses a self designed Max patcher to create music that features patient polyphony from a generally monophonic instrument, and highlights the percussive aspects of the saxophone via key clicks and pad thumps.

NOAH PHILLIPS
Noah Phillips uses preparations, open tunings and signal processing to make sounds with a guitar. He has played with many of his favorite musicians and hopes to continue making music for years to come.
