For our mid October installment of the Composers in Performance Series at Canessa, we are super excited to present Chicago guitarist Julia Miller with percussionist Andrea Centazzo and Elbio Barilari. Gabby Fluke-Mogul will be presenting new compositions for violin.
Julia Miller:
As a guitarist, Julia performs with the electroacoustic trio Auris, with Gimlet Eye, and as a frequent soloist and collaborator in experimental and avant garde chamber music. Auris’s current cd has been released on Artco Records (2009). Julia completed the performance half of a double MM in Classical Guitar Performance at Northwestern University in 1993, and currently serves as the Jazz, Folk and Contemporary Guitar Department Chair at the Music Institute of Chicago, where she is also a Suzuki Guitar specialist.

Elbio Barilari:
Composer, performer and writer Elbio Barilari was born in Montevideo, Uruguay, in 1953. He studied in his own country as well as in Brazil and Germany, and moved to the US in 1998. Barilari’s music has been performed by Orquesta Filarmónica de Montevideo, Orquesta de la Radio y Televisión de España, Colorado Symphony, Grant Park Festival Orchestra, Chicago Sinfonietta Chamber Ensemble, Ravinia Festival, Civic Orchestra of Chicago, Chicago Children’s Choir, Lyric Opera Orchestra, Chicago Arts Orchestra, and Baroque Band, among others. His music has also been performed by many chamber ensembles and soloists around the world, including clarinetist Paquito D’Rivera, trumpet players Orbert Davis and Jon Faddis, bandoneon players Juan José Mosalini, Raúl Jaurena, pianists Mauricio Nader, Susan Merdinger, Avalon String Quartet, Kaia String Quartet, Conjunto de Música de Cámara del Sodre, Ondas Ensemble, and the Millenium Chamber Orchestra.

Andrea Centazzo:
Italian American composer, percussionist and multimedia artist Andrea Centazzo has been for 40 years a bold explorer of contemporary art. In the early 70's he introduced a new concept of percussion playing, migrating from the Free Jazz to a new form of improvised music, defining itself. In the late 70's, Centazzo was one of the foundersof the NY Downtown Music Scene with his seminal collaboration with John Zorn, Tom Corra, Eugene Chadbourne, Toshinori Kondo and others, documented in many albums. In 1976 he established ICTUS Records, one of the first musician operated labels, recording with Steve Lacy, Evan Parker, Pierre Favre, Derek Bailey, John Zorn, Alvin Curran, Albert Mangelsdorff, Don Cherry and many others. He left the improvised music scene in 1986, moving shortly after to Los Angeles, CA and dedicating himself to composition and video making. Centazzo authored 3 operas, 2 symphonies and almost 500 compositions for all kind of ensembles, plus many award winning video films. Back to live performing in 1998, he created solo concerts and solo multimedia concerts, playing live in synch with videos that he shoots and edits. His last project "Einstein's Cosmic Messengers" has been produced by LIGO, Caltech and NASA.
The Library of the University of Bologna at DAMS, just recently dedicated to the composer theFondo Andrea Centazzo where all his works are collected and made available to students and scholars.

Gabby Fluke-Mogul:
Gabby Fluke-Mogul is a performing, teaching, composing, & collaborating-improviser based out of the bay area. they have existed as a body//violin-body in south Florida, western Massachusetts, & the wider New England area. through improvising//composing, GFM hopes to create space for individual & collective deep listening, laughter, intimacy, negotiation of identity & narrative, love, & healing. they are interested in the sensual nature of sound—how desire & eroticism are embodied & translated within the political & poetic context(s) of improvisation. gabby believes in the power of improvised music, children, birds, mice, & kindness. gfm performs in & with a variety of projects, installations, bodies, & instrument-bodies in addition to facilitating community-based workshops, & teaching (toddlers-adults) in public, private, & non-profit learning spaces. gabby holds a MFA in music performance and literature with improvisation specialization from mills college where they worked with Pauline Oliveros, Zeena Parkins, India Cooke, Fred Frith, Roscoe Mitchell, Kala Ramnath, & Kara Davis.
