On Thursday, December 14 at 7:30pm, Tom's Place presents
Spirit (percussion)
with
Bruce Ackley (sax)
and with
William Winant (percussion)
Spirit's long career as a percussionist spans from New York to Berkeley, working with with Julius Hemphill, Alan Shorter and the late bassist Jay Oliver in New York; and Butch and Wilbur Morris, Idris Ackamoor, Rasul Siddik, Prince Lasha and Oluyemi Thomas among many others in the Bay Area. Lately
Spirit has been more shadow than presence, and we're happy to be able to shine the light on him for one night in a pair of duos with saxophonist
Bruce Ackley (of the ROVA Saxophone Quartet) and fellow virtuoso percussionist
William Winant. Winant has been the avant-elite's go-to percussionist for more than 35 years. The 2014 Grammy nominee has performed with some of the most innovative and creative musicians of our time, from John Cage to John Zorn, from Sonic Youth to Oingo Boingo, from Iannis Xenakis to Terry Riley, and, as they say, beyond.
