The Nathan Clevenger Group has been playing sideways-but-melodic jazz-adjacent music in the Bay Area since 2003. Recently expanded to a percussion-heavy octet, the band is exploring a new series of pieces featuring dense rhythmic and melodic counterpoint and preparing to record their 3rd album in January 2019. KQED's Andrew Gilbert kindly opined: "Drawing on orchestral jazz concepts pioneered by Duke Ellington, Sun Ra and Gil Evans, (Clevenger) revels in coaxing a kaleidoscopic array of voicings from the band, writing extended dreamscapes that unfold with their own quirky internal logic."
