David Watson is an experimental musician – a guitarist, bagpiper and advocate for intelligent listening. His work encompasses improvisation and composition in a wide variety of contexts. Originally from New Zealand, he has lived and worked in New York City since 1987. Having co-founded the experimental label Braille Records in New Zealand and organized several music festivals there in 1980’s, he settled in New York and into the scene around the Knitting Factory and A-mica Bunker music series. His guitar playing has been featured in many combinations, notably for John Zorn’s Cobra, and in groups with Ikue Mori, Christian Marclay, Zeena Parkins, Fred Lonberg-Holm, and Tipple. In the early 90’s he added Highland bagpipes. He has worked to create a new vocabulary for the instrument, pushing the limits of space, sound and timbre. The Wire described Fingering an Idea, the CD he made for Phill Niblock’s XI label, as “shimmering lines, piling-up like an old Terry Riley piece.” Che Chen, writing for Other Music, described it as “long form tonal explorations that can be so otherworldly and engrossing that the slight wheeze of the windbag that comes at the end of each piece can be a startling and oddly necessary reminder, that these sounds were created by human breath." Regarding the trio project Glacial, Pitchfork stated "Watson's exemplary command of the instrument makes a solid case for...its inclusion in the future of improvised music." Watson has an ongoing project creating processions, new music in the context of walking and the outdoors. This has led him to making pieces for the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam, for the Tasmanian Police Band in Australia, and for a large ad hoc ensemble in a parking lot in Los Angeles. Phill Niblock has created the piece Bag, using Watson's pipe sounds as source material and performed it many times internationally. Watson founded and organizes the music performance series WOrK, which is predicated on exploring what “experimental” means today and has presented over fifty concerts since 2015. davidwatson.herokuapp.com
John Krausbauer is a music composer/multi-instrumentalist/improviser currently living in Oakland, CA. He has performed and presented his music in the U.S., Canada, Mexico, and Japan, in a multitude of settings - from basements, sidewalks, and rock clubs to colleges, churches, and museums. Numerous recordings of his have been released on independent labels in the US, Europe, and Japan. A long-time purveyor of the ur-drone and trance-psychedelia, his work involves audio transmissions for TOTAL/immersive sensory experience. Transcendence through repetition, duration, alternate tunings, maximum volumes, and (often) stroboscopic lighting. His current music projects include the Ecstatic Music Band (a 10+ member-collective of strings players); solo music for voice, violin, and synth; his collaboration with partner, Kaori Suzuki, with bells, voices, strings, tape; the Minimalist psych-punk group Night Collectors; his systems-based phase compositions; and ongoing collaborations with the Kentuckian steel bodied resonator guitar player, R. Matt Ingalls is a composer, clarinetist, concert producer, and computer music programmer. Often incorporating elements of improvisation, his music is heavily influenced by his long involvement in computer music. His composerly solo improvisations explore extended clarinet techniques that interact with the acoustic space, often as combination tones.
