Derek Monypeny (experimental/drone)
Sahba Sizdahkhani (santoor/drums)
&&
Jacob Heule & Kevin Corcoran (duo percussion)

Derek Monypeny is a Joshua Tree, CA-based guitarist and oud player who has played in the bands Oaxacan, ALTO!, and Sir Richard Bishop's Freak Of Araby Ensemble. He has performed and toured with artists such as Bill Orcutt, Jozef van Wissem, Eva Aguila/Kevin Shields, Arrington de Dionyso, and many others.

"Derek, using tastefully deployed effects and small and patient gestures, digs deep into those thin places where all kinds of inner space visions can flourish. You could talk about the complex social organization and communication among undiscovered species of highly intelligent insects deep under the sands of Mars . . . or any pulsing pattern of pure electricity hurtling somewhere through deep space . . . or shortwave radio broadcasts of the latest tunes by mutant Touareg troubadours roaming the dark side of the moon . . . etcetera" -Larry Dolman, Blastitude magazine

Iranian musician Sahba Sizdahkhani serves as a unique crossroad of East meets West. Inspired heavily by 1960’s free-jazz and Persian Traditional Music, he constantly channels the fire-energy and longing for connectivity that these two stormy histories represent.

Sahba completed a Bachelor of Arts at The University of Maryland in Art History and Archeology as well as in Jazz Performance at Berklee College of Music. He has played and recorded with artists on the imprints of Dischord Records, Southern Lord, and Drag City.

His hazy, atmospheric solo performances with 104-string santour and drums have been described as “a dispatch from antiquity.”

Jacob Heule is an improvising percussionist with a special interest in friction techniques. His music is shaped by intuition, listening, and following where the sounds lead. He embraces limited instrumentation - like a single drum and a single cymbal - as a commitment to exploring the depth of his instruments.

Kevin Corcoran is a percussionist most interested in techniques which extend the sonic possibilities of the instrument emphasizing textural sound, friction, sympathetic vibration, sustained tones and the use of found objects where emphasis is placed on freely arranging sonic events in duration rather than marking time by rhythm.

While Heule and Corcoran have collaborated in previous encounters this show marks their first duo performance in public.
