On Tuesday, November 18 at 8:00pm, Tom's Place presents
Ron Heglin and Fumi Okiji (voices)
Yon Sil (solo bass clarinet)
The first concert of the Tom's Place winter season (curated by Tim!) is on Tuesday, Nov 18 featuring a solo bass clarinet performance by Yon Sil, visiting from London, and the new vocal duo of
Ron Heglin and Fumi Okiji.
Yon Sil is visiting the Bay Area from the UK, where he regularly performs in London's vibrant experimental scene with artists such as Steve Noble, John Edwards, and Charles Hayward. Yon's bass clarinet solos - often performed in one uninterrupted circular-breathed flow - weave multilayered sound/note textures through refractions of noise and melody, and stem from an intensely corporeal and visceral relationship to his instrument, partly informed by his experience as a member of Ana Maria Avram and Iancu Dumitrescu's Hyperion Ensemble, whose radical, noise-adjacent improvisational interpretation of spectral music has deeply affected him.
Yon has performed with Birgit Uhler, Angharad Davies, Ashely Paul, Toshimaru Nakamura, Abstract Concrete, John Butcher etc., and appears on Creative Sources, Editions Modern, Aural Terrains, Confront Recordings, Chocolate Monk, Hideous Replica etc.
Ron Heglin and Fumi Okiji, both improvising singers, will open the festivities singing singly and as a duo. Ron we know well as a singer working with imaginary spoken and sung languages, blending melody with abstract textures to expand the language of improvisation. He says: "Language is all around us. Each language specializes in specific physiological sound production although humans have similar speech/sound enabling physiology. The entire sound spectrum of spoken and sung language is thus accessible to whatever creative imagination a performer might pursue."
Fumi Okiji is a vocalist and improviser who arrived via the London jazz scene
and is now a professor in the UC Berkeley Dept of Rhetoric. Her work spans black study, critical theory, and sound and music studies. She uses her voice, sometimes extended through audio processing, to share songs, standards, prose and improvised ideas, and also writes and talks about music.
