Harlem-based saxophonist and multi-media performer Matana Roberts and Oakland-based artist and performer Jacob Wick meet for one set of duo improvisations in the Trapezoid Gallery at the California College of the Arts. An informal discussion follows.

Matana (m(a)-ta-na\) Roberts; internationally documented, chicago born saxophonist/improviser/ composer/sound conceptualist; working in various mediums of performance inquiry; has created alongside visionary experimentalists of this time period in various areas of improvisation, dance, poetry, visual art, theater; as a saxophonist, documented on sound recordings as collaborator, side woman and leader. some recent work focused on the place/problem of memory/tradition as recognized, deciphered, deconstructed, interrogated through radical modes of sound communication, alternative styles of musical notation, and multi genres of improvisation; based in new york city.
Jacob Wick is based in Oakland. As a composer and improviser, he has performed throughout the United States, as well as in Canada, Mexico, India, and assorted European locales, and has taught masterclasses at the Art Institute of Chicago, the Cincinnati Conservatory of Music, the College of Charleston, and McGill University. As a sound and video artist, Jacob Wick’s installations and videos have been shown in Brooklyn, Baltimore, Chicago, and New Smyrna Beach. He is a leading contributer to Information Department and a co-resident at overca$h. Jacob Wick is a sponsored project of Fractured Atlas, a non-profit arts service organization.
