Friday, January 18
Fri 1/18 4:00 PM San Francisco Conservatory of Music [Caroline H. Hume Concert Hall, SF Conservatory 50 Oak St. SF]
In our "in the LABORATORY Series" we explore large-ensemble contemporary classical works that push the boundaries of the concert experience. This season, we explore several points of connectivity along experimentalist paths, laid down by composers all seeking to fuse a variety of music forms and personal experiences into multi-faceted sonic narratives. An epigrammatic song by Charles Ives serves as a jumping-off point for California-based composer Ted Hearne’s "‘The Cage’ Variations," a panoply of musical influence and memory that incorporates the work of numerous others in addition to his own. Pieces by Ingram Marshall, Molly Joyce, and Mark-Anthony Turnage join together in further exploration of the theme - sometimes in the direct interaction of live performers with pre-recorded sound materials from places across the globe. Bay-area native Timo Andres’ "Some Connecticut Gospel" draws another line back to Ives, rounding out the program with a different take on the notion of memory and that which has been left behind us. In accordance with SFCMP’s mission of encouraging and mentoring the next generation of new music performers, San Francisco Conservatory of Music students join the program as part of SFCMP’s education and professional development series.  More...

Thu 1/24 7:30 PM CCRMA [660 Lomita Dr, Stanford, CA 94305]
Evolving over the last seven years, "A Solo Voice", composed and performed by Odeya Nini, is an investigation of resonance, extended vocal techniques, performance, and pure expression, exploring the relationship between mind and body and the various landscapes it can yield. The work is a series of malleable compositions and improvisations that include field recordings and theatrical elements, aiming to dissociate the voice from its traditional attributes and create a new logic of song that is not only heard but seen through movement and action. In a multi-dimensionality that serves to both provoke and soothe in abstract communication, the voice is presented in its spectrum of natures as it travels through cultures, ages, emotions and colors, like photographs, with tender intimacy and bold aberrance.  More...

"this title refers to a counterproductive piece of private property"

Colin Tucker and Charlie Sdraulig realize a new work by Colin Tucker for speakers and two performers thematizing the given embodied actualities in everyday and performance settings. The work begins with an installation in which recordings of ambient sounds of the performance space are played back, activating ambiguities between live and recorded sounds. The installation proceeds seamlessly into a work for two human performers and speakers featuring subtle modifications of breath sounds.  More...

David Behrman - Lecture/Film - Why do highly creative people gather in unexpected places and make important work? This question will be explored at David Behrman’s Vaux lecture at the Danforth Lecture Hall in the Art Department. Prior to his lecture, view "The Frog in the Pond" by Terri Hanlon, which showcases the collection and work of Nina VanRensselaer, particularly the work of the California Funk artists she met and befriended while a graduate student in the UC Davis Art Department in the mid-1960s, including Robert Arneson, Wayne Thiebaud, David Gilhooly, and William Wiley. What happened there at that time parallels what occurred at CCM at Mills in the late Seventies — a new and unique body of art work came into being because of unusual circumstances, unusual artist faculty and unusual students – situations that could have jelled perhaps only in California.  More...

Lucrecia Dalt & Aaron Dilloway

The name Lucrecia Dalt may recall her past five albums (her last, Ou, on Care Of Editions), or her previous collaborations with Laurel Halo, or Julia Holter. Her sixth album, and first venture on RVNG Intl, Anticlines, is a volume of bodily and geological substrates within poetic theory and sound. It explores the boundaries and limitations of human consciousness.

Aaron Dilloway is an experimental musician born in 1976. He is an improvisor and composer originally from Brighton, Michigan who works with the manipulation of 8-Track tape loops in combination with voice, tape delays and various organic and electronic sound sources. Sun 3/03 5:30 PM Berkeley, CA [RSVP for address]
RSVP to AndrewBarnesJam@gmail.com for address. Each month, the All Ears Interfaith Sangha gathers to perform Sonic Meditations of Pauline Oliveros, and guest artists will lead us into new sonic and meditative experiences. Afterwards, we will gather for a community meal, with space for both formal and informal conversation to discuss the experience of listening, and connect with fellow Sangha participants. This time, our guest artist is Rachel Condry. She will share her piece Holding Empty Space, a sonic healing meditation for mothers of lost children (children of any age or gestation lost to miscarriage, abortion, stillborn, illness, accident or violence, including police violence). Whether they carried the child to term, were unable for some reason or whether they became mothers in other ways- mothers of the lost never put down their burden and never stop feeling their loss. They often think about what might have been. Mothers do more than simply grieve- they hold space on earth for those they lost- they remember and they carry on with empty weight in their minds. Let us remember and honor the lost with you in sound.  More...
