A special 77 pieces large Ensemble made up of some of the most adventurous musicians from the Bay Area and beyond will perform a debut composed and directed by award winning musician Vinny Golia!

As a composer Vinny Golia fuses the rich heritage of Jazz, contemporary classical and world music into his own unique compositions. Also a bandleader, Golia has presented his music to concert audiences in Europe, Canada, Mexico, Japan, Australia, New Zealand and the United States in ensembles varying dramatically in size and instrumentation. Mr. Golia has won numerous awards as a composer, including grants from The National Endowment of the Arts, The Lila Wallace Commissioning Program, The California Arts Council, Meet the Composer,Clausen Foundation of the Arts, Funds for U.S. Artists and the American Composers Forum. In 1982 he created the on-going 50 piece Vinny Golia Large Ensemble to perform his compositions for chamber orchestra and jazz ensembles.  More...

Violinist-composer Dan Flanagan (danflanaganviolin.com) performs The Bow and the Brush: an evening of 20 solo violin compositions, accompanied by projections of visual art from Flanagan’s personal collection. With music directly inspired by paintings, pastels, mixed media, and sculptures, the program highlights pieces by Raffaëlli, Guillaumin, Pinchon, and living artists including Paul Gibson, Nikki Vismara, and Elaine Pratt. The concert serves as a CD release party for Flanagan’s upcoming solo album, The Bow and the Brush, slated for release on MSR Classics, with visual video accompaniment of the art to be uploaded to YouTube. All of the musical works are Berkeley premieres; Works by Stephenson and Mecionis will be West Coast Premieres; and works by Neville, Weston and Flanagan (“Timeless”) will be World Premieres.  More...

The 10th anniversary New Music for Treble Voices Festival will celebrate foundational women composers Pauline Oliveros and Florence Price. The festival will include guest groups Ensemble, from the Piedmont East Bay Children’s Choir, and the Sacramento-based Vox Musica. Together with the PWC, the groups will share a day of workshops concluding in a public concert at 4pm. The concert will highlight guest soloist Michele Kennedy, who will sing a set of art songs by Florence Price, and feature solo sets by all performing ensembles, including the premiere of “Mouth,” composed for the PWC by our first Composer-in-Residence, Julie Herndon. The concert will conclude with all choirs performing Price’s “The Moon Bridge” and Oliveros’ “Tuning Meditation.”  More...

Hinge presents a program blurring the lines between contemporary classical and avant-garde rock. This concert features pieces ranging from the lush harmonies and quirky rhythms of Dan VanHassel’s Sea Change, to the noisy electronic soundscape of Katherine Young’s Camilles, to Hinge’s reimagining of a song by extreme metal band Meshuggah. As a part of Indexical's Micro-Residency Program, Kumi Maxson is facilitating weekly collective improvisation workshop spaces, every Monday* from March 27 to May 29 from 6-8pm. The workshops will consist of a short reading and listening session, followed by discussions of the liberatory political implications of musical improvisation. The workshops will cater to all levels of improvisational and musical experience (including none!), striving to create an accessible space for non-hierarchical participation and experimentation. Musicians are encouraged to bring their own instruments, however some will be provided for those who do not have their own. Masks are required for these workshops.
