Ahead of his Other Minds Festival performance in SF, Jaap Blonk presents “Songs of Little Sleep" and other recent works for voice and electronics.

As a vocalist, Jaap is unique for his powerful stage presence and almost childlike freedom in improvisation, combined with a keen grasp of structure. He has performed around the world, on all continents. With the use of live-electronics the scope and range of his concerts has acquired a considerable extension. Besides working as a soloist, he collaborated with many musicians and ensembles in the field of contemporary and improvised music, like Maja Ratkje, Mats Gustafsson, Joan La Barbara, The Ex, the Netherlands Wind Ensemble and the Ebony Band. He premiered several compositions by the German composer Carola Bauckholt, including a piece for voice and orchestra. A solo voice piece was commissioned by the Donaueschinger Musiktage. On several occasions he collaborated with visual computer artist Golan Levin, for the Ars Electronica Festival.  More...

Norman Westberg / Thor & Friends / Kal Spelletich

Best known for his work with the seminal outfit SWANS, Westberg’s output beyond that group is sprawling and restless. His name recurs and ripples through many interconnected micro-histories surrounding New York City’s music and art scenes. From appearances in film works associated with the Cinema Of Transgression, through to his participation in bands such as The Heroine Sheiks and Five Dollar Priest, Westberg’s name is woven deeply into the fabric of New York over the past three decades.

After five years of touring as the percussionist of The Swans, Thor Harris began Thor & Friends in the autumn of 2015 as a vehicle to experiment with a cast of rotating Austin based musicians in the vein of American minimalism. As an instrument carpenter and acoustic polyglot, Thor & Friends is the sound of Harris’ return home — an elongated greeting and ode to his community, woodworking shop, and the instruments his hands bring texture too.  More...

Sun 4/08 7:00 PM House Concert [Contact concert host at Harry@fullplatemedia.com]
House concert in Berkeley Hills featuring music of Berkeley composers David Jaffe and Sheli Nan, and San Juan Island composer Alex Shapiro. Violinist Karen Bentley Pollick plays Jaffe's solo fiddle fireworks "Cluck Old Hen Variations," as well as his fanciful "Impossible Animals," in which the violin is embedded in a menagerie of computer-generated singing bird-humans. She is joined by harpsichordist Jonathan Salzedo for the premiere of "Three Musicians (after the Picasso Paintings)," a Picasso-like abstraction of American roots music, in a setting created specially for this house concert. Jaffe himself will take the stage as he tackles his "magnum opus for a minuscule instrument", the solo mandolin "Ellis Island Sonata," a musical journey drawing on themes passed down from his mandolinist father and grandfather. The concert is rounded out by two additional violin and harpsichord works, Sheli Nan's lyrical "Absinthe avec mes amis" and the wild "Slip" by Alex Shapiro.  More...

Wed 5/09 7:30 PM Rendon Hall at the California Jazz Conservatory [2040 Addison Street, Berkeley]
LET’S CALL THIS is a new meeting of three improviser-composers who have developed singular voices as longtime members of the Bay Area creative jazz community. Saxophonist Hafez Modirzadeh joins with bassist Lisa Mezzacappa and drummer Vijay Anderson to explore original compositions, structured improvisations, and conceptual flights, born from a shared sense of curiosity and possibility. Modirzadeh is known for developing a unique poly-tempered approach to jazz based on the music of Iran. Anderson composes tightly knit music with weaving melodic lines and a driving momentum. Mezzacappa’s compositions combine asymmetrical grooves with sonic abstractions and free zones of exploration. She’s been called “one of the most imaginative figures on the Bay Area creative jazz scene” by The Mercury News and “a Bay Area treasure” by KQED. This is a special opportunity to hear the debut of this inventive and adventurous new trio.  More...
