Sat 5/15 7:30 PM Lake Merritt Amphitheater [Between 12th Street and 1st Ave., Lake Merritt Blvd, Oakland, CA 94612]
In collaboration with the CCA Wattis Institute for Contemporary Arts, Oakland-based poet/performer/artist Indira Allegra, with sound artist and composer Shanna Sordahl, presents a triptych of new performances at Lake Merritt, a large tidal lagoon in the center of Oakland designated as the United States’ first official wildlife refuge in 1870 and identified as a COVID-19 transmission hotspot for the city today. Using deconstructed cello sounds which play with tension, timbre, and noise, alongside vocals and the sound of the lake itself, Sordahl and Allegra perform new compositions that work with viral musical time, creating a public offering that explores what we can learn from the coronavirus structure rather than only fighting it.  More...

"Talos Dreams" explores the line between made versus born in a musical work based on the real and imagined robots of ancient Greece. It’s inspired by the tale of Talos, the mythical robot that guarded Crete against invaders. The divide between human and not human, born vs. built, is a concept in artificial intelligence that’s not only recent, but in fact thousands of years old.  More...

Women in Parallel Empires (2021) - World Premiere

Flutists Jane Rigler and Tessa Brinckman present the world premiere of their 22-minute acousmatic video, a "space opera," in posthumous collaboration with Cécile Chaminade's Sérénade aux étoiles (Serenade to the stars, 1911). Women in Parallel Empires explores how we might reclaim flute compositions by women composers dismissed from the Western canon, by re-assembling them within contemporary contexts, and addressing (and/or subverting) the concept of Empire, genius, and extraction in Western “art” music. A short pre-concert discussion, between Jane and Tessa about their collaboration, starts at 4:00 PM (Pacific time).  More...
