San Francisco, CA 94102]Ever in thrall of the brilliant music of the late pianist Cecil Taylor,
Rova Saxophone Quartet, along with eight other intrepid comrades in sound exploration, will present an homage to the iconoclastic innovator. After the success of our collaborative 2018 concert, Air: A Tribute to Cecil Taylor, Rova was inspired to plan an evening featuring a reworking of Mr. Taylor’s album-length masterwork, Dark to Themselves, along with an opening set of Taylor-related performances by other players in the community.
Dark to Themselves, rearranged primarily by Rova member Steve Adams, will be performed by Orkestrova—a flexible expansion of the Rova Quartet, including guitarists Jean-Paul Bourelly and
Henry Kaiser, bassist
Jason Hoopes, and drummer
Donald Robinson, in San Francisco on Saturday April 20, 2019.
In addition to Dark to Themselves, the evening will feature Positive Knowledge, a duo of Oluyemi and
Ijeoma Thomas, on reeds and vocals, respectively, presenting the poetry of Cecil Taylor; and duo B., a collaborative project of bassist
Lisa Mezzacappa and percussionist Jason Levis. All participants have deep connections to Taylor’s art, and the 3 segments of music will pay fitting tribute to this great visionary. The concert will offer the audience fresh views of his compositions, and exhilarating moments of improvisation.
