Ever in thrall of the brilliant music of the late pianist Cecil Taylor, Rova Saxophone Quartet, along with eight other intrepid comrades in sound exploration, will present an homage to the iconoclastic innovator. After the success of our collaborative 2018 concert, Air: A Tribute to Cecil Taylor, Rova was inspired to plan an evening featuring a reworking of Mr. Taylor’s album-length masterwork, Dark to Themselves, along with an opening set of Taylor-related performances by other players in the community.

Dark to Themselves, rearranged primarily by Rova member Steve Adams, will be performed by Orkestrova—a flexible expansion of the Rova Quartet, including guitarists Jean-Paul Bourelly and Henry Kaiser, bassist Jason Hoopes, and drummer Donald Robinson, in San Francisco on Saturday April 20, 2019.

In addition to Dark to Themselves, the evening will feature Positive Knowledge, a duo of Oluyemi and Ijeoma Thomas, on reeds and vocals, respectively, presenting the poetry of Cecil Taylor; and duo B., a collaborative project of bassist Lisa Mezzacappa and percussionist Jason Levis. All participants have deep connections to Taylor’s art, and the 3 segments of music will pay fitting tribute to this great visionary. The concert will offer the audience fresh views of his compositions, and exhilarating moments of improvisation.  More...

Arab.AMP presents Magda Mayas

Arab.AMP is delighted to present solo evening of work by Magda Mayas, a pianist living in Berlin. Over the past 20 years, she developed a vocabulary utilizing both the inside as well as the exterior parts of the piano, using amplification, preparations and objects that become extensions of the instrument itself. She explores textural, linear sound collage, and has developed a set of techniques that draw on the history of prepared and inside piano vocabulary, but are highly individualized and expand the language for internal piano music making.  More...

Voicehandler rounds out the bill with a set of unnerving glossolalia, electronic sputter and spuming percussion.  More...

Inspired by Julius Eastman’s politically powerful and sonically persuasive works "Stay on It" and "Gay Guerrilla," we launch into our cross-generational "at the CROSSROADS Series" with two major commissions. One is a new work by Sidney Corbett, an American composer living in Germany best known for his theatrical and emotionally powerful compositions. Also featured is an SFCMP commission from Bay Area composer, pianist, and improviser Myra Melford, featuring herself as improvising piano soloist with the San Francisco Contemporary Music Players. SFCMP will premiere a new piece by exciting Brazilian-Californian composer Fernanda Aoki Navarro, while LJ White offers his own version of the interplay between freedom and structure in a work for solo violin and electronics. SFCMP also sponsors its 3rd Annual SF Search for young composers—this time writing for trios of players drawn from the instrumental forces for Myra Melford’s premiere—to complete the multi-generational portrait.  More...
