Karl Evangelista’s Labas: Exploring the Filipino-American Avant-Garde

Filipino-American guitarist/composer Karl Evangelista is joined by an all-star cast of instrumentalists for “Labas”, a journey through Filipino tradition and the immigrant experience by way of modern jazz and powerful sonic abstraction.

Evangelista ranks among a new wave of musicians pushing the traditions of jazz and experimental rock into the 21st century. Hailed by Signal to Noise magazine as “one of the most original instrumentalists and composers of his generation,” Evangelista’s music explores multicultural concepts with sonic intensity and political fervor. As part of boundary-breaking art rock duo Grex, Evangelista has toured nationwide over a dozen times, and his talents have led to work with the likes of Fred Frith, Louis Moholo-Moholo, Steve Berlin (Los Lobos), Scott Amendola, Ben Goldberg, Lewis Jordan, and Asian Improv aRts co-founder Francis Wong.

Fri 6/28 7:30 PM Tom's Place [3111 Deakin Street Berkeley]
On Friday June 28th at 7:30pm, Tom's Place presents
David Rothenberg (clarinet), Elliott Sharp (guitar)
Nightingales in Berlin & IrRational Music

Elliott Sharp is an American multi-instrumentalist, composer, and performer. A central figure in the avant-garde and experimental music scene in New York City for over 30 years, Elliott Sharp has released over eighty-five recordings ranging from orchestral music to blues, jazz, noise, no wave rock, and techno music. He has pioneered ways of applying fractal geometry, chaos theory, and genetic metaphors to musical composition and interaction. And he's a wicked guitar player.

David Rothenberg is, as well as being a composer and jazz clarinetist (see his 2010 recording "One Dark Night I Left My Silent House" with Marilyn Crispell on ECM https://www.ecmrecords.com/catalogue/143038751902/one-dark-night-i-left-my-silent-house-marilyn-crispell-david-rothenberg ), well-known as an author and naturalist, concentrating on animal sounds viewed as music.  More...

Christopher Burns and Peter J Woods present solo audiovisual performances exploring contemporary issues of politics and social justice through video, animation, theater, and improvised electronic music. Burns’ Interferometry collages text, animation, and a variety of musical genres to relate a story about a 19th-century episode in the history of science as a parable about invisible structures in contemporary society. Woods ventures into realms of performance art and endurance as he interrogates whiteness and privilege.  More...

"Fame is a vapor, popularity an accident; the only earthly certainty is oblivion.” -- quote popularized by Mark Twain. Creation and destruction. Grandiosity and hubris. Glory and The Abyss. These are some of the themes explored in recent collaborations in moving image and sound by Kerry Laitala and The Atchleys. Media archaeologist and 16mm projector performance spellbinder Laitala will present new and resuscitated imagery, with composer / improviser / experimental musicians The Atchleys (K & K) providing live audio accompaniment. The light and sound display will be sequenced to cycle through elemental orbs, leaving viewers draped in a colorful cloak of decay, rebirth and contemplation.
