Steven Bernstein Fest: MTO WEST, Shows at 7:00pm & 8:30pm

A master of the previously obscure slide trumpet, Steven Bernstein is a fearless improviser, composer and arranger. For this four-night residency presents two of his most explosive ensembles.

“When the time comes, Bernstein clicks an invisible switch and the band pops into semi-flawless unison. At that point, you might imagine yourself in Harlem in 1929,” says the Village Voice about trumpeter Steven Bernstein’s expansive Millennial Territory Orchestra, an ensemble inspired by the pre-swing era territory bands that crisscrossed the country in the 1920s and 1930s. Loose, rambunctious, and fun with an irreverent take-no-prisoners approach, the MTO grapples with tunes ranging from Basie and Mingus to Prince and the Grateful Dead to an entire album devoted to the funk of Sly and the Family Stone on 2011’s MTO Plays Sly. Presenting the West Coast debut of his MTO material, the New York-based Berkeley High alum pays homage to his early years by christening a new version of this unpredictable assemblage featuring a host of Bay Area jazz luminaries including clarinetist Ben Goldberg, saxophonist Howard Wiley, violinist Jenny Scheinman, and trombonist Jeff Cressman.  More...

The David Brower Center & Other Minds are pleased to present Linda Bouchard with Kyle Bruckmann for the fourth installment of our 2018 The Nature of Music series. Bouchard will present excerpts from FLOCKING, as in “birds in flight” — the magical spectacle of hundreds of birds flying in their coordinated journey – and DROP, a live structure for woodwind and electronics with oboist Kyle Bruckmann.
Linda Bouchard’s works are defined by the importance of color and textures, and the structures of her compositions are intimately linked to the orchestral choices she makes for each composition, be it a solo piece or a composition for full orchestra.
Her compositions are often inspired by nature’s geometry, structure, and textures, as if writing music could begin by staring with a magnifying glass at nature’s elements — water, gas, rock formations, chemical reactions — then from those images creating a series of abstract landscapes.  More...

Sat 10/20 4:00 PM Taube Atrium Theater [401 Van Ness Ave SF]
For our season-opening concert, we offer a special celebration of the music of Elliott Carter. Our "on STAGE Series" features large-ensemble contemporary classical works of the most influential and innovative composers of the 20th and 21st centuries. Carter was the grandest of the grand American composers from the 20th century, who lived beyond his 100th birthday and yet wrote music that was fresh, inventive, and forward-looking to the very end of life. We welcome our newly arrived artistic director, Eric Dudley, with a program featuring three of Carter’s works, including the rhythmically energetic and emotionally powerful "Penthode" for twenty players. Complementing Carter’s enduring voice will be a wry work by the young American composer, Tobin CHODOS, written for an instrumentation uniquely drawn from Carter’s "Penthode," plus Canadian composer Sabrina SCHROEDER’s "Bone Games/Shy Garden," an essay in the sensuality of noises. The series will begin with our popular How Music is Made Composer Talk and Open Rehearsal with composer Tobin Chodos.  More...

Future Sonic Cities, organized by Zurich Meets San Francisco: a festival of two cities presents a mix of abstract hip hop, heavy electronic, and jazz inspired afro-futurist femme ballads by Bay Area sensations Lexagon (Alexa Burrell) and Aja Archuleta, along with international Swiss artists, Tim and Puma Mimi, and None of Them. These sound artists also pair with visual artists Alexa, Burrell, Ian Colon and Kim Nucci to layer projected visual art atop these experimental musical performances. This selection of time-traveling sonic artists explore and deconstruct stylistic boundaries to heal ancestral trauma, present speculative soundscapes, and provide immersive audio/visual experiences. This event is presented in partnership between Zurich Meets SF, Soundwave (8) Infrastructure, and the Center for New Music.  More...
