Anne Hege and Julie Herndon team up for a night of new sounds with original and familiar instruments. Showcasing excerpts from their latest projects including an album for The Tape Machine (an analog, live-looping instrument), The Furies (an opera for laptop orchestra and live vocalists), Shadow Prism (a light-responsive geodesic sphere), and works for extended piano, the concert will explore how instruments and bodies are essential to how we engage with live music performance.  More...

Doors That Only Open in Silence (open participation, non-hierarchical workshop in free improvisation)

The monthly series of improvisation research at Temescal Arts Center continues. Bring your instrument or come to listen. No advance notice needed — just show up. Small groups will be randomly assembled from submitted names immediately before each group plays. We try to keep transition time between groups at a minimum. Over by 10pm. Donations for the venue rental are encouraged.

Masks required! Vaccinated performers may unmask while performing. Unvaccinated performers must remain masked at all times. Skylights will be open for air circulation.  More...

This monthly series began in January 2020, was pre-empted after its first two shows by Covid-19, and reawakens this month with the first of two previously curated programs. The program includes sound installations based on field recordings by Maggi Payne and Chris Brown originally created for the Downtown Berkeley BART Plaza, and pieces by Michelle Moeller, and T.D. Skatchit (David Michalak and Tom Nunn) & Company. The musicians will mix their pieces from the center of the space, and the audience is free to choose their own listening location, and to move within the space to hear the music from different vantage points.  More...
