Angels with Gongs at the Nunnery
Ron and Michelle Angel will join Karen Stackpole and Tom Nunn in presenting an afternoon of music for, with and about gongs.

The Angels will perform on gongs and Ron's "Space Plate," a revolving disc with rods that are bowed - and it has lights! Karen will complement the Angels with her own assemblage of gongs and percussion while Tom Nunn will contribute long tones on the new Chase Plate as well as Lukie Tubes on Resonance Plate.

As per usual, snacks and drinks will be provided.

Donation: $10.

Tom Nunn has designed and built over 200 instruments, representing three basic types: space plates, electroacoustic percussion boards, and skatchboxes. All of Tom’s instruments are amplified using contact microphones and have sculptural qualities. He has performed extensively throughout the San Francisco Bay Area for over 30 years, as well as internationally. Currently he performs and records with: T.D. Skatchit, Music For Hard Times, RTD3 and Ghost in the House and has penned, WISDOM OF THE IMPULSE: ON THE NATURE OF MUSICAL FREE IMPROVISATION, a self-published book that examines various aspects of this illusive art and presents a theoretical foundation for creative listening, analysis and discussion.

Karen Stackpole - Drummer/Percussionist - In her explorations of metals, Karen has cultivated some distinctive techniques for drawing harmonics out of tam tams with various implements: rubber mallets, felt and yarn mallets, ball chains, bass and cello bows, kitchen utensils, and other small objects. Karen specializes in dynamic soundscapes and textures, but has also contributed gong sounds to more conventional musical genres and film soundtracks. In addition to solo work, she currently performs and records with Machine Shop: Live Amplified Gong Experience (a duo with electronics master, Drew Webster), Sabbaticus Rex, Ghost in the House, the improvising quartet Vorticella, the Francis Wong Unit, and the rock band Steel Hotcakes.

Ron and Michelle Angel work with the harmonic sounds produced by large gongs and related instruments for purposes of meditation and relaxation, sound healing for individuals and groups, and performance. Their growing collection of large gongs includes Paiste Symphonic and Planetary gongs, and Chinese Wuhan Wind and Chau gongs. They supplement these with numerous Tibetan and crystal singing bowls, and the Halo handpan drum by Pantheon Steel. The vibrations produced by large gongs have profound and penetrating effects on the mind and body. During the playing, the gongs not only generate constantly shifting harmonics themselves, but they also interact with each other, enhancing the sonic experience.
