Winners of a 2014 grant from the San Francisco Friends of Chamber Music and an affiliate ensemble with SFFCM, Black Cedar brings music from their upcoming debut album to San Francisco audiences in an event complete with cocktails, h'ordeurves, and great live music. “A curious trio explores a path less trod…and brilliantly performed,” writes the Berkeley Times. The San Francisco Examiner says, "They bring a solid academic foundation to their performances...a delightful introduction to early repertoire, presented with historically-informed performances on modern instruments." The South Bay Guitar Society writes, “They perform beautifully together: perfect synchronization of subtle rhythms and phrases.” Black Cedar is the only chamber ensemble devoted to the unique instrumentation of cello and guitar combined with a variety of flutes – wood flute, alto flute, bass flute, and Renaissance recorder – with a repertoire spanning almost five centuries. They have performed on-air with the Bay Area’s KALW and KKUP, they have appeared in concerts throughout Northern California, and their debut album will be released in 2015.

Luminous Spirals (1997) by Chinary Ung
Te Whanganui-a-Tara (1994) by Ross Carey
Hungarian Trio (2012) by Nathan Kolosko

"Te Whanganui-a-Tara" is a contemporary work from New Zealand inspired by Wellington Harbor. Kolosko’s "Hungarian Trio" is a celebration of traditional Hungarian folk melodies and dances that mimic the Hungarian folk instruments of a shepherd’s flute, ütőgardon, and cobza. "Luminous Spirals" is a spiritual reflection of Cambodia’s suffering and resurrection – the former at the hands of the Khmer Rouge, whose genocide took the lives of the composer’s four siblings, and the later the result of the country’s cultural awaking through the efforts of artists like Ung. “Life is so delicate,” says Chinary.

Flutist, Kris Palmer is a second prize winner in the National Flute Association's Young Artist Competition, a Carnegie Hall Recital Debut winner with Artists International, and a first prize winner in the Carmel Chamber Music Society Competition. Her solo album, "Versailles," features her own arrangements of music from the French Baroque, and she is the author of "Ornamentation According to CPE Bach & JJ Quantz." Kris holds a Doctorate of Musical Arts from Rice University, and she is a former member of the New Mexico Symphony Orchestra.

Cellist Nancy Kim is a tenured member of the Monterey Symphony Orchestra and the Santa Cruz County Symphony Orchestra. She holds a Bachelor of Music plus a Bachelor of Arts in English from Oberlin College in Ohio and a Master of Music from the Manhattan School of Music. As a dedicated chamber musician, Nancy has performed in venues throughout the world, including the Royal Opera House in Oman, Suntory Hall in Japan, Herbst Theater in San Francisco, Alice Tully Hall and Carnegie Hall in New York City, and Symphony Center in Chicago.

Guitarist, Steve Lin is a winner of the Boston GuitarFest Competition, winner of the East Carolina Guitar Competition, and finalist in the Taiwan International Guitar Competition. His albums, "Eliot Fisk Series Volume 1" and "Imagen," are available from VGo Recordings. Steve earned a Master of Music from the Yale School of Music, and he is completing his Doctorate of Musical Arts from the New England Conservatory of Music under Eliot Fisk. Steve is also a founding member of the Boston Guitar Project.
