Delirious Summer: Grex, Spring (Vancouver, BC), Moe! Staiano with Surplus 1980
-Summer musics converge, fuse, and ignite in a one-time meeting of three great RIO ensembles: Delirious Summer features a rare visit from Vancouver-based avant prog ensemble Spring, Bay Area art rock/post-jazz trio Grex's first show back from a smashing national tour, and local great Moe! Staiano's angular, explosive Surplus 1980

Show starts at 8 pm! Admission is $5-10, sliding scale.

Grex has been called "essential current-and-future listening," a "near-seamless blend of modern jazz, contemporary structuralist composition, indie rock, and blues rock." (Tiny Mix Tapes) Grex is not just "eclectic"--it synthesizes all of its influences into a brand of song based experimental rock that is unique, fun, and endlessly surprising. The band's mighty, twisted music has drawn comparisons to English Prog Rock (Henry Cow, The Cardiacs), creative jazz (Ornette Coleman, John Coltrane), and noise rock (Sonic Youth, The Velvet Underground).

Surplus 1980 is a post-punk rock band, the second coming of the instrumental punk band Mute Socialite. Formed by former Sleepytime Gorilla Museum percussionist, Moe! Staiano, Surplus 1980 is a thicker brew of an out-jazz touch on the punk ferocity.Surplus 1980 have a well-chosen name. As long as you pick up on the right 1980 musical references: the skewed-punk and post-punk and spiky New Wave ones: Essential Logic, Pere Ubu, the Fall, the Slits, the Ex, first-album Gang of Four: Surplus 1980 is a louder and faster band than any of those, but draw from the same well of shouty discordant rock’n'roll clamor, the same joy in complaining. Chord progressions are less friendly than on a Chuck Berry record, but have the same elemental drive, and the drums — plus Staiano’s various re-purposed metals and tools — are clattered up front to make sure we don’t miss them.

The musicians of Sprïng have been playing together in various incarnations for more than six years. The band is made up of some of the busiest tour-hardened musicians in East Vancouver's vibrant music scene. Having been instrumental in the success of bands like psych rock quartet SSRIs, iconic Canadian punk outfit The Rebel Spell, and acclaimed indie pop experimentalists Aunts & Uncles, Bleating Hearts and Thee Ahs, the seasoned multi-instrumentalists of Sprïng are poised to launch an exciting career bolstered by their previous successes.
