The Mills College Music Department and the Center for Contemporary Music present Mills Music Now 2014-2015:

INDIA IN THE ENGLISH MUSICAL IMAGINATION, 1897-1947

A special concert to celebrate the launch of Professor Nalini Ghuman’s book, Resonances of the Raj, newly published by Oxford University Press. Featuring an exciting line-up of leading Bay Area ensembles, soloists, and Mills music alumnae in a fascinating program of innovative compositions which reveal a rich and complex history of cross-cultural musical exchange between India and Britain during the first half of the twentieth century.

Music by Gustav Holst, Edward Elgar, Amy Woodforde-Finden, Liza Lehmann, John Foulds, and Kaikhosru Sorabji, including several US premieres, along with a historical recreation of All India Radio’s first Indo-European Ensemble and of music performed by the pioneer of Indian music in the West, Maud MacCarthy.

Performers include Schola Cantorum San Francisco under the direction of Paul Flight, the Friction Quartet, Madhuvanti Bhide, Hindustani vocalist, Maya Kherani, coloratura soprano, Gabriela Solis, contralto, Mark Bonney, tenor, Raymond Martinez, baritone, Elizabeth Gaston, flute, Kash Killion, sarangi, Sudarshan Siddhaye, tabla, Sheela Bringi, bansuri, and Esther Lakhani and Nalini Ghuman, pianos.
