Frozen States, Moving Soungds, Tania Chen and Ben Kreith Concert

Piano & Violin music performed by Tania Chen, piano and Benjamin Kreith, violin

The evening includes a performance of Morton Feldman's multi-perspective and glacial solo piano composition "Palais de Mari", 1982, a selection of Violin pieces performed by Kreith, and a premiere of Chen's "Frozen States, Moving Sounds" for Violin and Piano, 2014.

Benjamin Kreith
Violinist Benjamin Kreith has performed as a chamber musician, soloist and orchestra player throughout the US and Europe. He has premiered solo works at the Strasbourg and Marseille festivals and performed as a guest artist with the Ying and Muir Quartets. Ben helped to found the Ensemble CGAC in Santiago de Compostela, and has also performed with sfSound, Barcelona 216, and the Harvard Group for New Music. Recently he spent several years in Montana as a member of the Cascade Quartet and concertmaster of the Great Falls Symphony. He has had the privilege of working directly with composers including Francisco Guerrero, Gunther Schuller, and Magnus Lindberg. His live recording of Christian Lauba's Kwintus for violin solo is available on the Accord/Universal CD Morphing, and Luciano Chessa's Preludio e Siciliana (1987/2013) on Stradivarius records. Ben also plays the harmonica and experienced a brief moment of renown when his improvisations with Leonard Bernstein were broadcast on international television. He has taught at the Escola de Música de Barcelona, and served as artist-in-residence at the University of California, Davis.

Pianist, free improviser, sound artist, and composer, Tania Chen performs with pianos, keyboards, found objects, toys and vintage and lo-fi electronics.

She regularly performs avant jazz, free improvisation and composed music in Europe, USA and Japan. Composers she particularly focuses on are the American and British experimentalists and their influences, such as John Cage, Morton Feldman, Earle Brown, Michael Parsons, Chris Newman and Laurence Crane, along with Schoenberg, Webern, Satie and Scriabin.

She has given concerts, toured and recorded with UK improvising musicians Steve Beresford, John Edwards, Lol Coxhill, Alan Tomlinson, Roger Turner, John Butcher, Rhodri Davies and Terry Day and has recently worked and recorded with musicians such as Bryan Day, Tom Djll, Gino Robair, David Samas, Kyle Bruckmann, Oliver Steinberg, Ben Salomon, Michael Mersereau, Jaroba, Kevin Corcoran in the USA.
