How the Squid Sings (It Screams) – Bhob Rainey

We have visualizations, models, and mathematical abstractions to help us grasp patterns and feign predictions of clouds of data, weather systems, and markets. But perhaps the dynamic and uncanny medium of sound can best express the excessive experience of utter contingency arcing through each quark. See (and hear) several approaches to sonifying complex phenomena, building from small parts to larger systems.

Bhob Rainey, a recipient of the Pew Fellowship in the Arts, is a composer, improviser, and computer programmer. He founded the seminal improv duo, Nmperign, directed The BSC, an improvising large ensemble, for fifteen years, and created a series of multichannel electronic works as Prants (with Chris Cooper). His compositions work with large data systems, chaos, and the teeming underside of everyday communication technology.
