Toru Takemitsu is regarded as the first Japanese composer to achieve international recognition. His orchestral works are frequently performed, and he has a rich catalog of challenging modern pieces for chamber ensembles, duos and solo instrumentalists. Although it is not widely known outside of Japan, Takemitsu was also a prolific composer for films, drawing on a range of sources including traditional Japanese, avant-garde, and popular music and jazz. The Trinity Chamber Concerts presentation on 13 June will draw together the unique tonal world of Takemitsu's chamber music in works including flute, violin, harp, trumpet and piano, and songs (from films and otherwise) of surprising and varied styles.
