SF Bay Area bassist and composer Lisa Mezzacappa presents selections from her project avantNOIR, as a prelude to a screening of the 1941 feature film The Maltese Falcon, starring Humphrey Bogart and directed by John Huston. avantNOIR is a suite of compositions for jazz quartet plus guests, inspired by the crime fiction of Dashiell Hammett and Paul Auster. Mezzacappa and her ensemble perform a short set of music inspired by the noir stories Hammett wrote when he lived on Post Street in the 1920s, including The Big Knockover and The Maltese Falcon, with all the action taking place in the streets, bars, hotels and apartments of San Francisco.
