Rafael Toral: Space Studies

Melodic without notes, rhythmic but without a beat, familiar but strange, meticulous but radically free, "Space Studies" are exercises in "postfree jazz electronic music". Riddled with paradox, yet full of clarity and space, they’ve been described as "a brand of electronic music far more visceral and emotive than that of his cerebral peers".

Rafael Toral, born in Lisbon, 1967 is active as music performer and composer since 1984. Working extensively with the electric guitar and electronics, he created a blend of ambient, liquidrock and contemporary music and recorded albums regarded today as references in their genre. By the early 2000's he decided to start a transition from comfort to vulnerable action, entering an ambitious approach to electronic music based on silence, through decision making and physical gesture, in a way inspired by postfree jazz. By 2012 he realized, in a lifechanging consciousness leap, that personal development, the evolution of culture and the evolution of the universe are intimately connected.
