Serving the San Francisco Bay Area New Music Community

The Jenny Maybee / Nick Phillips collaboration began in September 2014, when they met at the West Coast Songwriters' conference. They recognized a mutual musical focus on creating space and depth, exploring the interior of sound, and weaving elegant lyricism with powerful, in-the-moment communication. At the Maybeck, the Trio will be playing music from their forthcoming album, scheduled to be released in early 2016 on the Blue Coast Records label.

About Jenny Maybee: Jenny Maybee loves exploring sound by creating new pathways, textures and structures as a pianist, vocalist, and composer. As a classically-trained jazz pianist and vocalist, she approaches music as the art of expressing the human body through song-structures and improvisation, drawing inspiration from her studies of the martial and healing arts and the vast sonic landscape of jazz and world music. Her playing reflects her range of exploration, dancing from stunning open space and intricate use of silence to powerful rhythmic intensity. After a decade of playing and teaching music in southern California, Jenny's love of adventure led her to study communication in another dimension by moving to the San Francisco Bay Area to complete her law degree at U.C. Berkeley. In the Bay Area, she has played in jazz groups including her own trio, the Empty Chamber Ensemble, the Heftpistole Chamber Ensemble, and Noertker's Moxie.

About Nick Phillips: Perhaps best-known as a jazz record producer--with credits on countless internationally-distributed releases including more than a dozen Grammy-nominated projects--Nick Phillips' heartfelt, lyrical jazz trumpet playing was put in the national spotlight in 2014 with release of his own debut album, Moment to Moment. Co-led with jazz pianist Cava Menzies, the album--which cracked the top 20 on the Billboard Jazz chart and was named one of the "Best Jazz Albums of 2014" by DownBeat magazine--drew enthusiastic comparisons to the work of jazz trumpet legends Miles Davis ("The Ballads Album Miles Davis Never Recorded" - East Bay Express) and Chet Baker ("... pristine, and moving, trumpet sound...Phillips' nods to his predecessor's [;Baker's]; fragility but also imparts a feeling of strength that comes through a sense of restraint." - DownBeat).
