Doors That Only Open in Silence #12 (open participation improv workshop) featuring Kyle Bruckmann /// Sunday @ TAC

The monthly series of improvisation research at Temescal Arts Center continues. Bring your instrument or just come to listen. Small groups will be randomly assembled from submitted names, and there will be a full set by Kyle Bruckmann.

"A Spurious Autobiography for John Barth is a framework for confronting the tautological pitfalls of solo improvisation - the sneaking suspicion that, in the wake of ‘developing a voice,’ one’s just doing the same damn things over and over again in subtly different contexts. I fed, in two separate passes, the entirety of my first solo album, entymology (2000), through the circuitry of the classic modular analog EMU synthesizer housed at UCSC. I then placed the chopped-up results into a mobile-like structure that digitally flings taunting distortions of overly familiar materials at me in unpredictable orders and combinations. The effect is one of strapping myself into a personal-hell monkey-mind batting cage for your voyueristic amusement."

Oakland, CA-based oboist and composer/performer Kyle Bruckmann’s work extends from a classical foundation into gray areas encompassing free jazz, electronic music and post-punk rock. He is a member of acclaimed new music collective sfSound, the San Francisco Contemporary Music Players, Eco Ensemble, Splinter Reeds, and Quinteto Latino. He has worked with the San Francisco Symphony and most of the area’s regional orchestras while remaining active in an international community of improvisers and sound artists. From 1996-2003, he was a fixture in Chicago’s experimental music underground; long-term affiliations include the electro-acoustic duo EKG, the art-punk monstrosity Lozenge, and the Creative Music quintet Wrack.
