This third can spur the individual to insulate from the environment and its demands, and the most extreme forms of desire for insulation may lead to psychogenic death. The intercessor or psychoanalyst intensify psychic insulation from the environment to occasion exposure to the most disturbing forces, so powerful as to have a deep-seated physiological effect. The scientist, the philosopher, the scholar, the athlete, all require psychic insulation through stylized disorientation.
