Out of the Box refers to the perception of sound and timbre. The music featured on this three-concert festival reaches for a deeper sense of acoustical awareness, blending and contrasting tonal elements, with each composer approaching the duo in a personal way.

A highlight of the festival will be Morton Feldman’s "Patterns in a Chromatic Field" – a 90-minute work presented in its entirety on Sunday afternoon’s program.

Monica Scott, martha & monica cellist, has also composed a new work for us called "More than Nine Minutes." The title refers to the freediver, the late Russian Natalia Molchinova, who once said: 'death and birth are important, and free diving is just a game for adults'. Molchinova disappeared in August of 2015, after she failed to surface from a planned 135 meter dive in the Mediterranean. Molchinova was considered one of the greatest freedivers of all time.

The concerts include three other commissioned works by Matt Ingalls, Matthew Goodheart, Chris Burns (world premiere). Also, Giacinto Scelsi, Iannis Xenakis, Mario Lavista, and an early work by English electronic music composer Jonty Harrison. Alfred Schnittke and Vladimír Godár’s sonatas provide a mystical and cinematic backdrop.

Program I: Saturday February 6 - 8 pm
