The Sound of Space with Ben Burtt and Geeta Dayal

Hear the extraordinary story of Bebe and Louis Barron from award-winning sound designer Ben Burtt (Star Wars, Indiana Jones, Wall-E), and learn the secrets and innovative techniques behind Forbidden Planet’s legendary score. In addition, electronic music scholar and journalist Geeta Dayal will discuss the Barrons’ formative role in the emerging electronic music scene within the avant-garde art world of 1950s New York.

Tonight’s program delves into one of the film’s most celebrated elements: its immersive, complex, and fantastically creative score by Louis and Bebe Barron. Considered the first all-electronic score for a film, the Barrons’ work (described as “electric tonalities” in the film’s credits) introduced viewers to the possibilities of electronic music and a soundscape that truly traversed an unknown universe.

Note: Seating for this program is limited to 150. To reserve a seat pick up your program ticket (no additional charge) onsite at the Kanbar Forum entrance beginning at 6:00 pm on March 17th.
